Amjad Elias Salfiti
Biography
Amjad Elias Salfiti is a prominent and seasoned member of the RIYADA Leagal Group, known for his extensive expertise in international law. Over his decades-long career, he has successfully litigated numerous significant international and domestic cases in the UK.
Salfiti is a British lawyer of Palestinian origin and has been a member of the Law Society of England and Wales since 1995. He has emerged as a key figure in several major cases across British, Arab, and international platforms, advocating for high-profile public interest issues that have had a substantial impact and contributed to changes in legislation in the UK and other countries.
He served as the defense lawyer in the landmark case of the Sudanese plane hijacking to the UK in 1997, which introduced a novel legal defense concept known as “Coercion” (the use of coercion to commit a crime), resulting in the acquittal of the defendants by the Court of Appeal. This case has since been cited in criminal law references in the UK.
Salfiti has also represented Alaa Hussein, who was appointed Prime Minister of Kuwait during its occupation, as well as providing legal support to Saudi, Iraqi, and Syrian dissidents in British courts seeking asylum. He played a pivotal role in cases related to the interpretation of Article “D” of the United Nations Refugee Convention concerning Palestinian refugees in 1951.
Additionally, he represented the family of Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, who was assassinated in Dubai, and the family of Suad Hosni in her controversial death in London. He has served as a legal Counsel to the State of Palestine, having been tasked by the late President Yasser Arafat to pursue legal action against various entities, including Jawad Al-Ghossein, Tunisia, Yemen, and the Arab League in the UK.
Currently, Salfiti serves as the President of the Arab Organization for Human Rights in the UK and Europe, where he seeks to promote justice and legal reform on an international scale. His expertise also encompasses arbitration cases, investment law, and corporate law, where he has represented clients in complex legal matters involving cross-border transactions and international business disputes.
